Movie Review: The Conjuring (2013)

I like to get mildly scared. Thrillers and horror films are fun to watch from time to time. Last night, I was on the hunt for an entertaining thriller and came across The Conjuring, a ghost flick about a family living in a house possessed by demons. Apparently it is based on a true story, which always attempts to give it that extra creep factor.

I will admit, I did find myself jumping and squinting through half closed eyes at some points, so for that The Conjuring gets my vote for a great thrill - unlike Insidious, which I had watched the week previous (side note, is Patrick Wilson on some ghost film kick or something?) However, I wasn’t terribly impressed by the premise. The “based on a true story” made me feel like I had to assess everything that was being shown and scrutinize it with a microscope. So when one of the characters are being flung around the living room by her hair, I was extremely skeptical at its verity. On top of that, I am always skeptical about Christian religion based haunting tales. What if a Hindu or Jewish family moved into that house? Would the ghosts just leave them alone?

While The Conjuring is a generically told (it ain’t no The Others) and ultimately unbelievable “true story”, it gets an average rating of 7/10. Watch and let me know what your thoughts on it are. What thrillers are you looking forward to watching this Halloween season?
