So these films weren’t nominated for Best Picture, but I thought they deserved a shout out.
Blue Jasmine - I think it is an absolute atrocity that it didn’t get nominated. Out of the films that are on that list, I would have definitely switched one out for this one. Woody Allen’s bittersweet love stories get me every time and Cate Blanchett deserves that Oscar for sure. She was so much fun to watch.
August: Osage County - I enjoyed this film. I think I do understand why it wasn’t nominated though. While the acting was phenomenal (Julia Roberts did a wonderful job in her role) I did feel the story line was too in between heavy and light for me to really see it as a contender. But I mean, who doesn’t like to see bald Meryl Streep dance in a drugged out stupor? Definitely worth a watch.
Blue is the Warmest Color - This foreign film was a perfect form of French New Wave. It was nearly reminiscent of Vivre Sa Vie, one of my favorite films. The innocent but seductive nature of the lead Adèle Exarchopoulos was just so real and beautiful to see. Apparently it didn’t make the cut because they didn’t apply to the Oscars early enough. What a shame.
To be completely honest, I thought the films as a whole were a little weak this year. Considering the big classics that have been churned out in the past, I was a little disappointed. I guess there’s always next year.
The 2014 Oscars air on Sunday March 2nd. What was your favorite pick?
